We had a lovely walk today around the north shore of Lake Lucerne. We followed the Swiss Path from Morschach to Brunnen, and the Waldstätterweg on through Gersau and Vitznau to Weggis.
A lovely walk around the north of Lake Lucerne |
Shortly after leaving Morschach we came across one of the markers on the Swiss Path (Weg der Schweiz). We had taken a photo at the same marker during a previous trip to Switzerland.

We followed the Swiss Path to its end point in Brunnen. The path from Morschach was mostly downhill.

At the lakeside in Brunnen we picked up a new path, the Waldstätterweg, which we will be following for a few days. Today it took us alongside the lake at Brunnen, then up out of Brunnen, down to the lake at Gersau, up out of Gersau, down to the lake at Vitznau, up out of Vitznau and down into Weggis.

There was quite a bit of climbing during the day. Parts of the path are marked as mountain walking paths, with a distinctive white red white marking on the signposts (normal paths are just marked in yellow).

Down into Gersau |
We enjoyed a lunch stop in Gersau before moving on to the next climb. One of the regular ferries which service the lake made an appearance while we were there.

Down towards Vitznau |
We arrived in Vitznau as one of the cog railway trains was getting in. There were lots of tourists around.
We arrived in Vitznau at the same time as a trainload of other tourists |
At Vitznau we had the option of taking a relatively flat cycleway on to Weggis, or to continue on the Waldstätterweg. We chose the latter, even though we knew there would be a bit more climbing involved.
Up out of Vitznau - a bit of climbing leading to views of the lake below and the mountains beyond |
After the climbing, some tricky descending |
Then more up and down |
Before finally descending towards Weggis |
We settled in to our accommodation at Weggis, then went down to the lake to enjoy the twilight.

QUESTIONABLE DESCENT
Path or peril?
Ladder or stairs?
Safety or scramble
Over scary snakes' lairs?
Path, not peril!
Sturdy solid stairs!
Safety in scrambling
Around lovely snakes' stares!
