DAY 55 - EINSIEDELN to MORSCHACH (Saturday 10 June)

This was our longest day's walk in Switzerland so far, and one that took us into the mountains. We were again on the Jakobsweg for most of the way, only diverging from it for the last 6 or 7 kilometres into Morschach.
Into the mountains today
We left Einsiedeln via the monastery, where the infrastructure was being installed for tomorrow's Tour de Suisse stage. We followed the Jakobsweg out of town and along a fairly flat river valley for almost ten kilometres.
We left Einsiedeln as the stage was being set for tomorrow's opening stage of the 2023 Tour de Suisse
The Jakobsweg out of Einsiedeln was fairly flat for a while.
We saw several other walkers and lots of cyclists on the path today
Eventually the path took a right turn and started rising quite steeply. There was a rapid altitude gain leading to the Haggenegg, at over 1400 metres the highest point of our trip so far. On the way up we had close views of the Kleiner Mythen and the Grosser Mythen, two peaks which dominate the landscape for kilometres around.
The path started climbing quite steeply
At one point we had to cross a raging torrent
Haven't had a puddle photo for a while
The views of the Grosser Mythen and the Kleiner Mythen opened up as we approached the Haggenegg
The Haggenegg was the high point of today's walk. From the pass, the landscape ahead of us was revealed: two lakes, lots of mountains, and a view of where we would be walking for the rest of the day.
View from the Haggenegg. The Mythens on the left, Vierwaldstättersee in the middle, Lauerzersee on the right.
The descent into Schwyz was relatively short and very steep in places. The views on the way down were amazing.

Down into Schwyz
In the town of Schwyz, we were treated to a wedding cavalcade driving past. We also recreated another moment from a previous trip.
Wedding car,  Schwyz. This car was followed by 10 or 12 others, all blaring their horns as they made their way through the town
Australian student in Schwyz, January 1985. Looks cold.
The above view has since been obscured
Here is a near approximation. The Australian is no longer a student, but is now a long-distance walker. Not so cold today.
After Schwyz the Jakobsweg continues down to the Vierwaldstättersee. We left it to climb up over a ridge to the village of Morschach, our destination for the day. When we reached the ridge there were panoramic views over the Vierwaldstättersee and the surrounding mountains.
About to leave the Jakobsweg
As ever, the sign marking for the walking paths was clear and easy to follow
We were leaving Schwyz and the Mythens behind us
With a new mountain landscape beckoning ahead
Heading towards Morschach
We stopped for a while at a lookout over the Vierwaldstättersee
The views here were pretty special
And we were pretty happy as we set off for the last couple of kilometres for the day

Poem of the Day:

SIGHTS OF THE SLOPE

Struggling down the mountainside
Was very very steep
Just a single toe out of line
Would leave me in a heap

I was feeling fit and tough
When gliding the other way
Climbed a crazy Swiss cyclist
Just going about his day

That put me in my place.
