DAY 40 - FREIBURG-IM-BREISGAU - Rest Day (Friday 26 May)

We strolled through the Colombipark, a green space just outside the old town

Freiburg is apparently the sunniest city in Germany. The sun was out for us all day, as we had a rest day to acclimatise ourselves to the new language and culture. We spent the first part of the day packing up some items we no longer needed (those puffer jackets and woollen beanies we seemed to wear every day for the first couple of weeks), and sending them home. We then had the rest of the day to wander/amble/pootle/stroll/saunter through Freiburg's old town.

The Bächle, or water channels, are a feature of Freiburg's old town

Freiburg has several fountains with drinkable water, where Australian walkers can refill their drink bottles
We have been struck by the prevalence of bikes since we have arrived in Germany. There are bike lanes and paths criss-crossing the city here, and cyclists of all ages are using them. We have seen people doing their shopping, commuting, picking up their kids from school, and generally just getting about by bike.
Cyclists riding past a restaurant. These ones were wearing helmets, most weren't.
We have again enjoyed a quiet rest day, and should be ready for the climb up to the Black Forest when we resume our walk tomorrow.
Day 40 - Bird (well, there were some pigeons and sparrows, but this one seemed a bit different)
