After an early-morning crossing of the Rhine, we spent the day walking on roads, paths and cycleways to the large town of Freiburg im Breisgau.

The countryside was flat to start with, but we could already see the hills and mountains that await us over the next few days.

We had a break for our picnic lunch in the village of Merdingen before a short climb up along some vineyards. We meandered a bit among the vineyards, then headed towards Freiburg along a succession of well-used bike paths.

When we arrived in Freiburg we followed a bike path alongside a canal to take us to our hotel.
