DAY 35 - GÉRARDMER to MUNSTER (Sunday 21 May)

Today we climbed up to the Col de la Schlucht, on the border between Lorraine and Alsace, and down to Munster. We spent most of the day on walking paths, with a few short road sections.

Most of today's walk was on walking paths
We started by walking a few kilometres on this path between Gérardmer and Longemer
There is a bakery in Longemer that we were counting on for our daily bread and healthy fruit. We had checked that it was open on Sundays.
Unfortunately, other people had the same idea. We were able to get our daily baguette, but by the time we were served there was no healthy fruit left.
The path took us alongside Longemer Lake. There were many other walkers out on this part of our route - many in groups,  some with dogs, some with children.
Longemer Lake - a popular location for a Sunday morning stroll
From Longemer we had a climb up to Lake Retournemer, then a steeper climb up to the Col de la Schlucht via the Chemin des Dames (not the same Chemin des Dames we were on a few weeks ago. Same name, different path).
It was a steady climb between Lake Longemer and Lake Retournemer
We had to join a queue to cross a bridge.  There were a lot of tourists out today.

The Chemin des Dames walking path - quite steep
It was then just a short distance to the Col de la Schlucht. At an altitude of 1139 metres above sea level, this was the highest point of our walk today,  and the highest of the French section of our walk. We enjoyed our picnic lunch at the col.
The Col de la Schlucht. At 1139 metres,  the high point of our trip so far
From the Col, it was downhill almost all the way to Munster. We enjoyed some scenic mountain views before descending quite rapidly to the village of Stosswihr.
There were some wonderful panoramic views as we began the descent
Then the long steep path to Stosswihr
Descending to Stosswihr
Some interesting sights in Stosswihr.
The stork is a special bird in Alsace. We saw numerous artistic representations of storks in Stosswihr, and more when we arrived in Munster.
We were very happy  to see a stork in a field on our way into Munster
We settled in to our apartment in Munster. When we went out to dinner we were delighted to see several more storks.

Day 35 - Healthy Fruit.  Fortunately the restaurant where we had dinner was able to provide some strawberries with cream and a healthy apple tart
