DAY 34 - REMIREMONT to GÉRARDMER (Saturday 20 May)

The elevation profile gives a very good picture of today's walk: a long flat stretch along a cycleway, followed by a long ascent, a short descent, and short flat bit to finish. We began by walking through the centre of Remiremont to pick up the Voie Verte des Hautes Vosges, a combined walking/cycling path that has the twin benefits of being away from vehicular traffic and being fairly flat. We stayed on the Voie Verte for around 15 kilometres.

Leaving Remiremont and its famous arcades at the start of another day on the road
On the Voie Verte des Hautes Vosges
We left the Voie Verte in Vagney for a rest/lunch stop, before climbing up to the Col de Sapois. There were a few cars on the road, and several cyclists enjoying the dry spring weather.
We have been seeing book boxes in many of the towns and villages we pass through.  Vagney has two.
A straightforward climb up to the Col de Sapois
There was a picnic table up at the col, so we used it as our afternoon rest stop. Then it was back on the road for the short but steep descent to Lake Gérardmer.
A step descent to Lake Gérardmer
We were surprised to find Lake Gerardmer full of tourists - we haven't seen many on our trip so far. We walked around a portion of the lake, and then made our way through the town to our hotel.
Lake Gérardmer - we were all of a sudden among hordes of other tourists
A lakeside stroll was a highlight of today's walk.
