DAY 32 - ATTIGNY to LES GRETRYS (Thursday 18 May)

We left Attigny bright and early

Most of today's walk was spent on the GR7 path, which we picked up at Darney. We also picked up a canine companion for a while.

Some sights we saw in Darney on the way through, including a Franco-Prussian war memorial and a Joan of Arc
A friendly dog joined us as we left Darney. She stayed with us for several kilometres, despite our best efforts to send her home. Fortunately, we came across a man walking his dogs who offered to take her back to her owner.
The countryside we passed through today was sparsely populated, with a lot of forest scenery and only one village and a couple of hamlets on the entire route.

There were a lot of hides along our route. Hunting is very popular in France, and many birds are fair game during the hunting season.
Some forest hides we came across today.
The small village of Vioménil is the site of the source of the Saône River. Nearby is a pleasant picnic area.

The grounds of the source of the Saône, including a lavoir and an inviting picnic table.
There is a network of walking paths around Vioménil, and we came across a couple of walking groups near the village. Our path (still the GR7) took us through more forest country and down to the Canal de l'Est.
We walked uphill out of Vioménil on the GR7.
and we were soon back in the forest
We passed some of the locals

We eventually emerged from the forest at the Canal de l'Est. There were people here enjoying the tranquillity of a public holiday - we saw walkers, cyclists,  and picnickers along its bank while we enjoyed a quick chocolate break. Then it was on to our accommodation in the country.
