We left Vittel this morning as the town was preparing for the day. We found the GR714 walking trail and followed it towards Lignéville. We left the path before that village to take a shortcut to St-Baslemont, where we had our first rest stop of the day.

The first part of today's walk - from Vittel to St-Baslemont |
From St-Baslemont we picked up a new path, the GR7. This trail follows the watershed across France - by and large, the rivers to the north of the path flow north and east towards the North Sea and the Atlantic, while those to the south flow to the Mediterranean. The section we were on today provided some memorable highlights.

The village of Relanges has two lavoirs. Neither are currently in operation. One is now used as a hall. The other was used today as a lunch spot for two passing long-distance walkers.

After lunch, we continued on the GR7 to Darney. We have been in the Département of the Vosges for a few days now, and we saw some Vosgian cows on this stretch of the path today.
|
On to Darney on the GR7 |
Darney has some notable tourist attractions, including a prehistory centre and a Czechoslovakian museum. We didn't visit them, but we did stop by the Bar des Promeneurs (Walkers Bar) for a coffee. It seemed appropriate.

On our way out of Darney, we inspected the Czechoslovakian Monument, which celebrates France's early support for the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia after World War I.

We walked the short distance on to the neighbouring village of Attigny, where we are staying the night. We had time to take in the sights of the village.

On to Attigny |
|
Some sights in Attigny. The lavoir is clean and has running water. It looks as though it could still be used today. |
|
Victor Noir, a 19th century journalist, was born in Attigny and is remembered there by this monument. He was famously shot by a Bonaparte in Paris in 1870. His grave is a prominent attraction in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris - worth looking up. |

Love it all! Such lush and green scenery makes fantastic photos along with a few old relics of times gone by. Thanks for the extra photos of the photographer, but we note they are not the same angle that Kath normally posts of you Russell ;)
ReplyDeleteA variety of angles... I've sent you a special one Deb 😉
