DAY 72 - ORMONE to SAILLON (Tuesday 27 June)

Today's walk took us down and up and down etc among the vineyards. We first picked up a trail that followed an old irrigation channel (the Bisse de Mont d'Orge) a few kilometres downhill towards Conthey.

Leaving Ormone by the vineyards. We were amongst the vineyards all day.
The bisses in the Valais canton have an interesting history. The one we were following had been built in 1885 to irrigate the vineyards.
The wonderful vineyard scenery had everyone reaching for their cameras
Apparently we were on another Camino route
Vineyards and mountains - we saw a lot of both today

We stopped for some refreshment in Conthey, then made our way through the town to the Chemin du Vignoble. We had been on a segment of this trail a couple of days ago. Today we followed it from Conthey to Saillon.
The Chemin du Vignoble went up, skirting the villages of Vétroz and Ardon
We followed the Chemin du Vignoble into Chamoson, where we stopped for our picnic lunch. The path rose and fell a couple of times on the way, providing wonderful panoramic views.

The path rose again after Chamoson, overlooking the village of Leytron, before descending steeply to Saillon. Here we left the path and navigated to our accommodation.

Poem of the Day:

THE SWISS BISSES

(Bisses rhymes with kiss, and not with
kisses
Though as an anglophone you'd be
excused for pronunciation misses)

Centuries ago, some pioneering greats
Accomplished a task most fine
They irrigated the Swiss countryside
In the region now known for its wine

They built les bisses, a wondrous feat
A daring and dashing design
An open-ditched water delivery
system
That today runs alongside the vine

If you find yourself in Valais
With an hour or two to spare
Why not explore the babbling bisses
As you take in the fresh summer air?
