DAY 37 - COLMAR - Rest Day (Tuesday 23 May)

We had a slow rest day in Colmar today. We were not the only tourists here - the town is well and truly on the international tourist trail, and it is packed with visitors from all over the place.

We went for a couple of walks through the old town and the Little Venice area. Early in the morning there weren't so many people about. By the evening that had changed, and there were groups of people roaming the streets and taking photos of the iconic sights of the town.

Of course, the tourists come to Colmar because it is a very picturesque town. There is plenty here to interest those interested in history, or photography.
This plaque on a house in Colmar is typical of many we have encountered across France. They alert us to interesting people and events which were previously unknown to us. In this case,  the lady who was born in the house marked by the plaque fought for two different countries in two wars in the nineteenth century.
The French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty, came from Colmar. There is a museum of his work here, with helpful pavement signs throughout the town pointing the way to it. There is also a replica of the Statue of Liberty on a roundabout in the town's industrial zone. You can see it from the window of the bus if you go to the Decathlon sporting goods store to replenish your footwear supplies.
Yes,  we had a ride on a bus today. It was a rest day, after all.

So, after another enjoyable rest day, we are ready to continue our walk tomorrow.
