DAY 25 - BAR-LE-DUC - Rest Day (Thursday 11 May)

Bar-le-Duc - full of character

Bar-le-Duc is a lovely old French town, full of character and history. We had a relaxing rest day strolling around its streets and alleyways.

Among the features of the town are the different-coloured window shutters and the decorative street lamps
There are many historic buildings in the town, with informative signboards to tell us about them.

Many famous people have been associated with the place. Two of Napoleon's generals,  Oudinot and Exelmans, were born here. The houses where they were born are acknowledged, and there are statues of both men in prominent positions in the town.

Joan of Arc visited Bar-le-Duc during her short life, and is remembered with a statue in town and another in the church of St Étienne.

An impressive monument commemorates the role of Bar-le-Duc natives Pierre and Ernest Michaux, who played a significant role in the early development of the bicycle.

While we enjoy a bit of historical contemplation, we are also happy just strolling the streets, and we spent most of our day admiring the sights of the town.
